How Are Silk Duvets Made?

Silk Dreams duvets are filled with 100% Mulberry Silk. The oval-shaped cocoons are stretched out into a large web, thus producing one layer of the silk duvet. It takes many cocoons and several layers of the silk fabric to produce enough batting to make a high quality duvet. The outer cover for Silk Dreams duvet are made out of 100% Habatai or 100% Soft cotton.

Why Choose A Silk Duvet?

Silk is a gift of nature, making Silk Dreams silk duvet’s the healthy choice for luxury and comfort. Our silk duvets are non-allergenic and are filled with natural premium quality mulberry silk floss, making them valued for their warmth, while being incredibly lightweight. Silk adjusts to your body temperature, adding a perfect layer of warmth by wicking moisture away from your skin into the air. Silk contains sericin, and anti-acrid property that prevents the growth of mites and fungus. Natural albumen fiber is a component of silk; it contributes to skin health by speeding metabolism of skin cell. Coupled with the silk amino acid, and permeability properties, silk contributes to the relief of joint pain, asthma, arteriosclerosis, neurodermatitis, and insomnia. With the trend towards healthy living people are choosing the natural properties of silk as a healthier alternative to traditional duvets.

Why is Silk Bedding "Warm in Winter: Cool in Summer"?

Silk can absorb water up to 30% of its own weight before it feels damp. As the temperature in the bed rises, you perspire more. The water then evaporates from the Silk Blanket or Duvet because of your body heat. Evaporation causes cooling. So in effect the silk acts as a thermostat. The more you heat up the more the silk will provides cooling and vice versa. So you get a good sleep at an even temperature all night long.

How should Silk Bedding be cleaned?

Our silk duvets are best maintained through occasional airing.
Silk Dreams duvets have been specially designed to be dry cleanable, although for best results it is a better to air the bedding by hanging it outside out of direct sunlight from time to time, in preference to dry cleaning Dry cleaning is sometimes expensive and not often needed if you air the quilt on a regular basis. Once every 2 months is more than enough. That having been said, you can sponge off an area that has had something spilt on it, for example.

What should my Duvet Cover and Sheets be made of?

The highest quality bedding that we recommend is based on sand-washed Habotai silk. We recommend this because:

  • It can be machine washed at 30C and rarely needs ironing.
  • It maintains the lightness of the silk duvet.
  • It enhances the possibilities that the Chinese attribute to silk, i.e. that silk worn next to the skin slows down the aging of one's face and keeps one's hair softer and smoother. Maybe this is because there is less friction between silk and the face and hair than with other fabrics.
  • Habotai is not as slippery as satin, which means that you and the bedding are more likely to stay in the right place!
  • House and Dust mites don't like silk. If you are completely surrounded by silk you are well defended!
  • Cotton is a great alternative. Although a bit heavier and more abrasive than silk, at least they can be washed frequently at a robust temperature (60C) to keep the dreaded House and Dust Mites at bay.

How is the Silk filling held in place?

A Silk Worms thread can be over a mile long. Many layers of Long Silk floss are pulled out by hand to the dimensions of the duvet until the right weight is reached. Silk Dreams duvets have a specially designed technique in manufacturing which makes our products far superior to most other silk duvet manufacturers in the market. Our duvets, unlike many others, have been designed so that during the cleaning process the possibilities of bunching or moving of the silk is almost impossible.

The silk floss remains evenly distributed throughout its life.

Why is the Duvet Case tacked to the Duvet Filling rather than sewn ‘Quilt fashion’?

Since the filling cannot migrate within the caseb "Quilt Sewing" is not necessary. More importantly, if the duvet were "quilted", the duvet would lose a lot of its warmth, as the sewn lines would diminish insulation and become "cold lines" across the duvet.

Thickness, weight and warmth.

Thickness affects pricing. Don’t price compare by using the terms Summer or Winter weight. Compare duvets by total silk weight or weight per square metre. Silk Dreams Duvets have a minimum of 550-600 grams per square metre of silk fill, unlike many other duvets which are only 400 - 450 grams per squard metre.

How can I check the Size Category of my bed?

We recommend buying the 'same' size quilt as your bed so it stays 'on' your bed.
